Professor Martti Nissinen
Professor of Old Testament Studies, University of Helsinki
Professor Nissinen worked first as Assistant Professor of Old Testament Studies at the University of Helsinki from 1985-94, serving also as translator of the Finnish Bible Translation Commission. Between 1994-2002 he was a Research Fellow of the Academy of Finland, and from 2002-07, Professor of Bible and the Ancient Near East, University of Helsinki. From 2007 he has been Professor of Old Testament Studies at Helsinki. From 2014-19 he was leader of the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence ‘Changes in Sacred Texts and Traditions’ (www.cstt.fi) and has served as the President of the Foundation for the Finnish Institute in the Middle East (2010–21). He is member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. A more recent project has involved the submission of several articles on Akkadian love literature and the Song of Songs; this is part of an ongoing research project entitled ‘Desire, Agency, and Gender in Ancient Near Eastern Love Poetry’.
