The Society for Old Testament Study (SOTS) is a learned society, based in the British Isles, of professional scholars and others committed to the study of the Old Testament.

Summer Meeting to be held online

In light of ongoing coronavirus restrictions and uncertainties regarding the possibility of meeting physically in July, the Committee of the Society for Old Testament Study has approved a recommendation from its Programme Sub-Committee that the Summer Meeting, scheduled for July 12-14 in Sheffield, be now held fully online.

While it is regrettable that that we will not be able to meet physically as usual, we are excited by the opportunity to make the experience of the Winter Meeting available at a much reduced cost (£25; £15 for the usual concessions) and to those who might not otherwise have been able to attend physically.  We will of course do all that we can to make the meeting as engaging as ever and appreciate your patience as we work out the final details, with a view to sharing these in the coming weeks.

Normally, the details of the Winter and Summer Meetings are published on this website and are sent to members through the post/email (the details about the Meetings are posted here). Summaries of papers given at past conferences are also available.

The Society commissions publications in the field of Old Testament Study, including an annual Book List and regular monographs and other volumes. It also publishes  a Wiki providing reliable scholarly information in this subject area and an online exhibition on Jerusalem. Details may be consulted and links explored on the Publications page.

For members of the Society, discounts are available on purchases of books from a number of publishers, not least for SOTS-sponsored volumes but also on other publications in this field of study. Details may be consulted and links explored on the Book Discounts   page.

2017 marked 100 years since the Society was founded. Several projects were completed to celebrate the occasion, among them a volume of essays: SOTS at 100, and two web-based projects, as well as celebrations during the meetings in January 2017 in Nottingham and in July 2017 in London. The two web-based projects are an online exhibition on Jerusalem as well as the SOTS wiki.

The current President of SOTS is Prof Hugh Pyper.
