Joseph

This is a stub.

The story of Joseph is in the book of Genesis. He is the eleventh of twelve sons of Jacob who was later renamed as Israel. The names of the twelve sons are:
By Leah: Reuben (Jacob’s first born), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun.
By Rachel‘s maid Bilhah: Dan, Naphtali.
By Leah’s maid Zilpah: Gad, Asher.
By Rachel: Joseph, Benjamin.

Joseph has a sister, Dinah, born of Leah.
(Gen 29-30; 35:16-26)

He marries Asenath the daughter of an Egyptian priest (Gen 41:45), and by her has two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim (Gen 41:51-52). These were recognised as the eponymous ancestors of the two most important tribes of the (northern) kingdom of Israel, who occupied the central highlands of the country, while ‘Joseph’ is sometimes used as a name for the kingdom or its people (e.g., Amos 5:15; 6:6).
