Kirby Laing Doctoral Studentships in Old and New Testament


KIRBY LAING DOCTORAL STUDENTSHIPS IN NEW AND OLD TESTAMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE (CHELTENHAM) STARTING 1 OCTOBER 2023

The University of Gloucestershire is offering up to three full fees doctoral studentships in New Testament funded by the Kirby Laing Trusts to commence on 1st October 2023. Preference will be given to applicants wishing to undertake the doctorates on a distance learning basis.

Applications are invited from students interested in pursuing research topics within the following areas:

  • Social identity approaches to a New Testament text or issue;
  • Interpretation of a New Testament text or issue using the ancient Jewish Dead Sea legal papyri as a significant source of contextual information; or
  • Interpreting the poetry of the Song of Songs from the perspective of Imagism.

The primary supervisor of the successful applicant(s) will be Professor Philip Esler. The studentships will be for full-time and for three years. Applicants for a New Testament subject will need to have strong New Testament Greek, those for the Song of Songs option will need strong biblical Hebrew. The studentships are open to applicants from the UK and abroad.
