Yehezkei Kaufmann Professor Emerita of Biblical Studies, Hebrew University of Jerusalem

Professor Japhet is recognised as a world  authority on the  books of Chronicles. She was  the first women to head the Department of the Bible and the  Institute  of Jewish Studies at the Hebrew University.  She won the prestigious Israel Prize in 2004 for her contribution to Second Temple studies, and from 2006 was President of the Union of Jewish Studies.

In 2023 Professor Japhet was awarded the British Academy’s distinguished Burkitt Medal for Biblical Studies for her pioneering contribution to the study of post-exilic Hebrew literature, particularly the books of Chronicles and Ezra-Nehemiah. See
